Abstract

This University of Warwick Undergraduate Research Support Scheme (URSS) project explores the story of the British Empire in the modern Middle East (c. 1800-1956), focusing on the development of increasing state involvement and influence exercised through state-backed commercial actors. To understand this modern phe- nomenon, it first pays attention to earlier precedents from the early modern period, which established the initial models for corporate-imperial engagement.
