Abstract
The aim is to review literature concerning usage of online dating platforms and loneliness, and identify factors that may influence the relationship. Three questions were identified for this review: (i) the effectiveness of online dating in reducing loneliness, (ii) the role of population characteristics in influencing loneliness when using dating apps, (iii) the impact of dating app usage during the Covid Pandemic and loneliness. A comprehensive search across 5 databases yielded 152 research of which, 7 met the inclusion criteria through the PRISMA process. The main results was that (i) online dating platforms provide temporary relief from loneliness due to the initial social interactions, however for this to be maintained, in-person interactions is required, (ii) gender, age, sexual orientation, and a rejection-sensitivity personality trait are factors influencing the effectiveness of online dating in reducing loneliness, and (iii) the Covid-19 restrictions emphasise the importance of a physical presence in fulfilling social and emotional needs. The systemic review has practical implications for the real-world. Developers can implement features to encourage deeper connections, facilitating tools to support users in transitioning to in-person meetings, and the incorporation of emotional support to improve users’ mental health wellbeing. This review highlights opportunities for online dating platforms to improve by facilitating tools to address users complex social and emotional needs.
