Abstract

This project is about the mathematical understanding of Landau damping an effect discovered by Landau in 1946. Landau damping refers to the rapid decay of perturbations to the electric field in the plasma. The exciting and unusual aspect is that this damping only occurs when the perturbation is sufficiently smooth.
