<text>The Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a group of genetic disorders characterised by joint hypermobility, stretchy skin, or fragile skin, which are not well understood and can have a disabling effect on a person’s life. These syndromes are caused by changes in the structure and function of proteins, such as collagen, which comprise the extracellular matrix (ECM). The ECM holds cells together, but not much is known about how changes in its composition and molecular dynamics contribute to the development of EDS. This study will use solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to determine the atomic structure and dynamics of ECM obtained from cell culture of fibroblasts from people with and without EDS. By carrying out quantitative comparison of NMR relaxation spectra of the two types of samples, we aim to find similarities and differences that lead to the identification of molecular signatures of specific subtypes of EDS. We envisage that this research will lead to a deeper understanding of EDS and provide insights into how it develops and operates on a molecular level. In the long term, we anticipate that our work may lead to developing better diagnosis strategies and more targeted treatments.</text>

<text>Low-cost spirometers could improve access to lung function testing in settings with limited resources. This study compared the Frugal spirometer with Vitalograph using existing data from patients with asthma in Ghana. Records from 38 patients were reviewed, and 21 had complete, same-day measurements before bronchodilator medication, with Frugal readings passing the recorded software checks. We compared forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and peak expiratory flow (PEF) using Bland–Altman analysis, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and paired t-tests with Benjamini–Hochberg adjustment. Repeatability was assessed in 15 patients using the coefficient of variation, which expresses variation in repeated readings relative to their mean. FEV1 and PEF showed encouraging agreement, with ICCs of 0.858 and 0.757, respectively. Neither showed a statistically significant mean difference after adjustment (p = 0.271 and p = 0.298). Frugal FVC averaged 0.393 L higher than Vitalograph (adjusted p = 0.014), with 95% limits of agreement from −0.714 to +1.499 L. On average, repeated FVC and FEV1 readings were more consistent with Vitalograph. Differences in the number of repeats and available information on test quality limited this comparison. Vitalograph PEF repeatability data were unavailable. These findings support further development of the Frugal spirometer, with encouraging results for FEV1 and PEF. FVC agreement and repeatability remain priorities for improvement. Non-significant p-values do not establish equivalence, and further validation is needed before the devices can be considered interchangeable.</text>

<text>Given that the peace process in Cyprus has to-date remained securitised with a strong reliance on Track 1 diplomacy, which has thus far failed to make significant progress, this study provides and analyses the viewpoints of Cypriot youth – and a limited selection of those that work and engage with them - which has long been a neglected demographic in relation to the Cyprus Problem and the Cyprus peace process. A total of 32 topics were discussed by participants, during a series of semi-structured focus groups and interviews, which resulted in a combined total of 98,000 words of qualitative data which has been analysed thematically. Participants of this study agreed that Cypriot youth remain disinterested in the Cypriot peace process, although their voices are often neglected by a peace process that is exclusionary and lacks transparency. Both Greek and Turkish Cypriots also felt that the education system in Cyprus promoted ethnonationalism and is unhelpful in developing bi-communal relationships. Many participants of this study were regularly involved in organisations that promote bi-communal activities - the challenges they face, particularly in encouraging engagement from a more diverse group of young Cypriots, are also given extensive discussion in this paper. Participants felt frustrated by the lack of progress in the peace process so far and they all expressed a strong desire for a solution to be achieved, often blaming a lack of political will and international support as the reason a solution has not yet been found after 50 years of failed negotiations. After discussing the views of participants, this paper argues that a multifaceted approach is essential to progress forward to an internationally accepted bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with a need to pursue significant education reforms, along with greater pressure from international actors, and a peace process that is truly transparent and inclusive. </text>
