The UK economy experienced a sharp GDP growth rate contraction of 11 per cent in 2020, followed by consecutive positive growth in 2021 and 2022. However, On aggregate levels, the UK GDP has yet to return to the pre-pandemic level in 2019, suggesting that Covid's impact persists three years into the present. There is mounting evidence showing the negative impact of the pandemic is not shared equally among all agents of the economy in the UK. The gross decline in income equality of different economic groups could have underlying implications for inequality of opportunities and economic mobility. Existing literature regarding the COVID-19 impact on the economy primarily focuses on the labour market and income inequality. The pandemic impact on intergenerational mobility remains to be an under-studied area. This paper aims to analyse the impact of Covid on intergenerational income mobility in the UK. Their relationships will be explored for both gender groups to capture gender inequality. Title A name given to the resource Mathematics Academic Paper An academic paper Abstract The abstract of the paper It is hypothesised that both cancer cell growth and chemotherapy drug tolerance can be dependent on the circadian rhythm, causing differences in treatment efficiency at different times of the day. Chronotherapy aims to exploit this dependency to provide an optimal treatment plan for patients. This plan seeks to maximise the elimination of cancer cells while minimising drug toxicity resulting from chemotherapy. This paper aims to extend previous works and provide analyses of optimal solutions for various cancer treatment models, including scenarios in which growth is partially coupled with the circadian rhythm, cases where drugs target growth, and models that account for delayed drug effects. Using Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle (PMP), we found the switching function of each model that decides the optimal time period to apply or stop the drugs. In the first two models, we noted the aperiodic switching between full and no drugs in optimal solutions and explored the nature of the switching zones. While the optimal solution for the last case is complex, it is proven to be bang-bang and can be reduced to a simpler growth model using the Pseudo-Steady State Hypothesis (PSSH) for sufficiently fast drug absorption speeds. Furthermore, we presented the backward integration method to analyse the nature of optimal solutions. The exploration of optimal solutions provides a better understanding of optimal treatment plans for chronotherapy models and offers insights into potential future analyses of more complex and clinically applicable models. The term “3.11” refers to the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011, a devastating incident that further triggered tsunamis and nuclear disasters. This research seeks to answer how people remember and reflect on such sudden disasters through cinema, rather than any other art forms. We also explored whether post-traumatic stress levels differ by gender (female vs male). Forty-nine earthquake survivors were recruited to complete online questionnaires measuring PTS, cognitive flexibility, flexibility mindset, resource changes, and everyday routine maintenance. Multiple regression analyses indicated that none of these variables significantly predicted PTS (p = .704). Independent samples t-test suggested that females reported significantly higher PTS levels than males, t(20) = 2.27, p = .035. While the findings did not support previous research linking these factors to post-traumatic stress (possibly due to the small sample size) they highlight significant gender differences. Future research should involve larger samples, explore additional factors contributing to post-traumatic stress, and investigate the underlying reasons on females reporting greater post-traumatic stress compared to males. Description An account of the resource My supervisor’s research team is investigating how neurons and glial cells communicate with each other, and to detect the release of L-Aspartate from neurons, they are expressing L-aspartate oxidase (LAOx) on the surface of mouse brain cells which generates hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as one of the products. However, this production of H2O2 would not normally occur in brain, and therefore, it could have undesirable physiological effects. Catalase is an enzyme which metabolizes H2O2 and it could be combined in a construct with LAOx to prevent excessive accumulation of H2O2 in tissue. Microbial catalases with a high catalytic activity and a small mass would be appropriate. Such catalases could be expressed in ordered arrangements with LAOx and fluorescent proteins on mouse brain cell membranes to reduce the diffusion of H2O2 away from the detecting cells. My project therefore devised a range of constructs that combine catalase and LAOx tagged with a red fluorescent protein (mCherry) in different sequential orders to optimize oxidase-based biosensors for use in brain without overly reducing their sensitivity. What is special about this model is that the spiking threshold, which is the threshold of potential required for a neuron cell to spike, adapts with time instead of being constant. The external input current of the neuron is also a stochastic process, and therefore the neuron potential also isn’t deterministic. This project looks at the theoretical properties of the system of equations, plots the system of equations features in the spiking times of neuron cells.
