<text>Thirty-five years after German reunification, the five eastern Länder voted in a manner unmatched by any western state. This dissertation argues that two causes operate in sequence rather than in competition. The transformation of the 1990s left a region that converged on western income levels until roughly 2019, then stopped, and that remains owned, headquartered, and administered from elsewhere. Forty-five years of separation determined the political form of grievance, producing a population that’s far more secular, ethnically homogeneous, and less attached to the churches, unions, and organizations that absorb similar grievances in the West. Using state-level and constituency-level data from the 2025 Bundestagswahl alongside aggregate series from 1980, the dissertation shows that district income strongly predicts AfD support in the east (r = −0.80, R2 = 0.64, n = 60) and only weakly in the west, while it barely predicts the combined Die Linke and BSW vote anywhere (r = −0.28 at state level). Two cultural correlations that appear to support a simple cultural thesis are shown to be more complex: irreligion reverses sign between subsamples, and migrant share cannot be cleanly separated from income. The conclusion is that authoritarian-leaning parties aren’t a single phenomenon, and that the AfD vote, in particular, tracks the accumulated economic position of a place rather than its current labour market.</text>

<text> Ovarian cancer is an aggressive malignancy with limited treatment options. This study investigates the impact of the catalytic compound JPC129 on the gene expression of A2780 ovarian cancer cells via RNA sequencing. Differential expression and GO enrichment analyses identified EGR3 and IFNG as key upregulated genes, associated with hematopoiesis regulation, epithelial cell proliferation, and leukocyte cell-cell adhesion. These findings suggest that JPC129 modulates the tumor microenvironment and may influence both tumor suppression and immune dynamics, demonstrating its potential as a therapeutic candidate. </text>

<text>The overall aim of this project is to characterise how inhibitory neurons in the respiratory rhythm generating microcircuit influence expiration. Breathing in mammals is a fundamental behaviour produced by movements generated and controlled by the central nervous system. There are 3 oscillators responsible for respiratory rhythmogenesis and pattern formation: one each for inspiration, post-inspiration, and expiration. Given the number of subpopulations of neurons within the respiratory rhythm generating microcircuit, the experiments focus on the possible sources of inhibition to the expiratory oscillator and the excitatory populations that may drive these inhibitory neurons. Reciprocal inhibitory coupling prevents the respiratory phases from being coactive. However, the role of this inhibitory coupling appears to be much more than simply sequencing the different phases of breathing. Firstly, inhibitory neurons within the inspiratory oscillator increase burst probability and co-ordinate inspiratory firing. Secondly, expiration is generated by post-inhibitory rebound, with excitatory drive playing a subsidiary role. Whilst the source of inhibition within the inspiratory oscillator is known, the neurons inhibiting the expiratory oscillator remain elusive, and are the focus of this investigation. Whereas inspiratory and expiratory oscillators contain inhibitory neurons, inhibitory interneurons are apparently absent from the post-inspiratory oscillator. Therefore post-inspiratory mediated inhibition of the expiratory oscillator must occur through a relay nucleus.</text>
