<text>I will explore how the Spanish-American War was not only represented in the public consciousness of 1898 but also its legacy in our own times. However, to understand the story of the war is also to understand key characters historically associated with it so I will briefly outline our main cast here. William Randolph Hearst, a newspaper magnate who cried so loud for the war that the sheepish ears of Washington had no choice but to listen, even if they were both fervently crying of a Spanish wolf. In Washington, William McKinley, the sitting President had inherited a tense foreign climate: the Spanish Wolf had been prowling around Cuba since 1895. Intensified Spanish intervention in its Cuban colony not only undermined the newly incumbent President but also a historic doctrine maintained since the Presidency of fifth U.S. President, a Founding Father, James Monroe. The 1823 Monroe Doctrine inscribed a new American promise to protect independent surrounding Southern American countries from European colonisation. So, how did President McKinley square this foundational doctrine of diplomacy with the domestic pressures calling for not only American interventionism but then also for expansionism?</text>

<text>This report contains our research output after participating in the 2025 Undergraduate Research Support Scheme (URSS) at the University of Warwick. The project was carried out with the Warwick Mathematics Institute (WMI) under the supervision of Helena Verrill. First, we introduce important concepts that we then use to study some of the properties of the stereographic projection. Using these properties, we investigate how this projection redistributes lattice points by extending Minkowski's theorem to sets on the sphere. We finish our project by developing and 3D printing models of the stereographic projection.</text>

<text>This project investigates two questions: how does a regime’s coercive capacity influence its response to protest movements, and do dissidents consider this information before deciding whether to protest? In the model, a dissident receives a noisy signal about a regime’s coercive capacity, before deciding whether to organise a protest. The regime observes the dissident’s action and chooses a level of repression subject to its state capacity. Suppressing a protest is costly, and the effectiveness of suppression also depends on the relative strength of the dissident. While a successful protest is rewarding for the dissident, orchestrating a failed one may incur harsh punishment. We find that the regime’s dominant strategy is to always fully suppress any protest, regardless of its type. In equilibrium, the dissident protests if he believes the regime is weaker than his capacity to protest</text>
