<text>Solid-state NMR spectroscopy is a method that has been used to probe water accessibility in biological molecules. Water accessibility is the exposure of a biological structure to nearby water molecules. The interaction of water with proteins is essential for their structure and function, affecting protein folding and dynamics. Hence, applicability of the method is tested on a well-documented and simple model GB1 protein, which is a β1 immunoglobulin G-binding protein G derived from the streptococcus bacteria. The method employs fast magic-angle spinning (MAS) of the sample at 54.7° to average out anisotropic interactions and reduce line broadening. At 60 kHz, spin diffusion is partially suppressed so that a combination of spin diffusion and nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) is responsible for polarization transfer. </text>

<text>Mannan is a polymer of simple sugar units which forms a major part of the primary cell walls of most plants, but its structure can vary drastically across plant species of different evolutionary stages with no well-understood reason. Samples of a model plant (Arabidopsis thaliana ) with different modifications to the genes which control its mannan will be studied and compared. This should provide some insight into the role mannan plays in the cell. Solid-state NMR, which uses the behaviour of atomic nuclei in a magnetic field to reveal structural information about a sample, is the only non-destructive technique that can provide sufficiently detailed information on the sample cells. 1D and 2D NMR spectra will be acquired, with the spectral shifts being referenced against the CCMRD database. The spectra acquired will reveal the proximity and interactions between plant cell wall components. Future research could solidify the findings through repetition of the study on softwoods as opposed to flowering plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana .</text>

<text>Antimicrobial resistance has resulted in $66.4 billion in costs annually, and over 1 million deaths per year, resulting in a global effort to produce more antimicrobial drugs for clinical use. New drugs need to be tested not only for their antimicrobial efficacy but their antibiofilm activity. Pomegranate molasses and vinegar extracts have shown promising results in MIC's, analysed by culture turbidity and optical density with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus cultures. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were found at 3.13% and 6.25% respectively, when tested in synthetic wound fluid with pomegranate molasses and lower concentrations of 1.57% and 1.57% in same conditions with pomegranate vinegar. Colony counts indicated effective biofilm eradication in chronic wound models with a more than a 4-log10 reduction in the respective bacteria cultures.</text>
