<text>This article seeks to understand the importance of identity in impacting the French East India Company by taking as its subject François Caron (1600-1673), a foreigner and one of the first directors of this fledgling company. Caron, as a protestant and former employee of the Dutch East India Company, provides a unique example as to how both religious and national identity permeated 17th century commerce and affected decisions both in Europe and Asia. In the case of the French East India Company, Caron provided some of the impetus within the company to hire a range of foreigners which contributed to a multi-confessional organisation. Identity, however, remained a key source of difference and in Caron’s case would lead to suspicions and accusations of impropriety from his French colleagues. This ties into the historiographical question of the principal-agent-problem and whether Caron acted in the company’s best interests as his loyalty came under scrutiny. Caron came to be heavily relied upon by both Jean-Baptiste Colbert and Louis XIV who invested Caron with an unquestionable authority that would have significant consequences for Caron’s climactic decision to establish a French presence on Ceylon in 1672. </text>

<text>Fraudulent banking transactions create substantial financial and operational risks for financial institutions and their customers. The increasing availability of transaction-level data provides an opportunity to identify potentially fraudulent activity using statistical learning methods. This study aims to develop and compare statistical models for predicting whether a banking transaction is fraudulent. A labelled dataset containing approximately 200,000 transaction records is used, with fraud status represented by the binary response variable Fraud. After the removal of direct personal identifiers and other unsuitable fields, variables describing transaction characteristics, customer information, account balances, merchant categories, locations and transaction devices are considered as potential predictors. The labelled data are divided into a 70% training set and a 30% test set using stratified sampling. Two multiple logistic regression models are developed using different sets or representations of the predictor variables. For each model, backward stepwise selection based on the Akaike Information Criterion is used to reduce the full set of candidate predictors. Five-fold cross-validation is conducted within the training data to examine the predictive performance of the modelling procedures. The two final models are then fitted using the complete training set and applied to the independent test set. The test predictions are compared with the actual fraud outcomes using confusion matrices, and the predictive accuracy of each model is calculated. Model 1 achieved a test accuracy of 96.91%, while Model 2 achieved a slightly higher accuracy of 96.93%. Therefore, Model 2 was selected as the final model based on its higher test accuracy. The findings demonstrate how logistic regression and backward variable selection can be used to support the identification of potentially fraudulent banking transactions. However, the results should be interpreted considering limitations relating to data quality and the possible use of simulated transaction data.</text>

<text>Young women leaving the care system are disproportionately represented among those entering the sex industry (Coy, 2009, p. 255; Pearce et al., 2003). While research has linked the sexual exploitation of boys to experiences in local authority care (Lillywhite and Skidmore, 2006), young women remain exceedingly overrepresented within the commercial sex trade (Brown, 2019). Subsequently, this analysis will focus primarily on the influence of the care system on young women’s entry into this sector. Given the limited empirical research investigating the specific vulnerabilities that influence care-experienced women’s entry, a separate analysis for this gender-based issue is required (Coy, 2008; Coy, 2009). Through a literature review and the collection of primary data, this research project aimed to identify the key drivers behind 70% of women in the sex industry having histories in the care system. Three main aims were identified for this project: (i) To identify the key themes among care-experienced children that drive their entry into the sex industry and how they emerge, (ii) to understand how these recurring themes contribute to entry into the sexual marketplace, and (iii) to explore the extent to which these contributing factors are acknowledged by the care system and addressed through effective policy intervention. Core themes that emerged include childhood adversity, negative view of self, multiple placement moves, emotional insecurity, minimal safeguarding within care facilities, stigmatisation, and socio-economic disadvantage. Qualitative research methods, including primary interviews and questionnaires, have been conducted alongside a review of secondary data. This approach facilitated an in-depth analysis of the key themes identified, uncovering their significance and contribution to the extensive participation of care-experienced women in the sex industry.</text>

<text> Female sexuality has long been a site of controversy and stigma — from its representation in eighteenth-century print culture to nineteenth-century legislation, and now within contemporary feminist discourse surrounding platforms like OnlyFans. Although modern society often views itself as sexually liberated, the persistent media outrage directed at women in the sex industry, rather than at the men who consume their work, suggests otherwise. This project seeks to challenge that narrative by examining how women, both within and outside the sex industry, have resisted such stigmas and asserted their voices throughout time. It will analyse three primary sources from different historical contexts and compare them with an interview I conducted with a contemporary sex worker, Kayla Wilde.</text>
