              <text>&lt;p&gt;I finished my 2nd year of mathematics knowing a lot of maths but feeling unconfident in how to do “real world” problems that involved data, numerical methods and statistical tests. Therefore, I was so excited to work with Siri Chongchitnan in a Cosmology research project. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; I learnt practical Bayesian statistics which is something that passes by a lot of maths students unless they take a more academic module. Then, I learnt some Cosmology and the programming language R, to infer things like the curvature of the universe from real telescope data! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; The actual project took the form of me and my supervisor discussing what I would spend the next week researching/investigating, and then me trying to do that. So, whilst I wasn’t going in blind, I was doing the researching and problem solving myself which was fun (but tough in places).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Furthermore, me and my supervisor got on really well. Therefore, an unseen bonus of the URSS was having someone to chat to about my future who had studied the things I wanted to study. Now in fact, he is supervising my 3rd year essay.&lt;/p&gt;</text>

Distributed systems rely on resource provisioning algorithms to parallelise these jobs across many nodes; however, traditional algorithms are unlikely to perform- an inefficient and costly waste of power and time. This research aims to design the optimal algorithm for parallelisable tasks, under a real-world workload, and validate theoretical expectations with the results from system simulations.</text>

              <text>The Shortest (Common) Superstring problem (SSP) is a classical optimisation problem on strings (texts): to find a shortest text that contains all input texts. This problem is known to be NP-hard and therefore the main research has been concentrating on the design of fast and good approximation algorithms for it. Many constant-factor approximation algorithms have been designed, including in particular the GREEDY algorithm. The aim of this research is to understand what this algorithm does and analyse how close it gets to the optimal solution, using graph-theoretic algorithms and empirical data.</text>

Zebrafish YSLs form during early cell divisions when membranes of marginal blastomeres retract, forming a multinucleated layer. YSLs can grow abnormally, associated with specific gene defects. Studying what causes these defects to arise during YSL development can aid understanding of healthy embryonic development, and could be used as a model organism to better understand mammalian development. </text>

              <text>In the ever-evolving financial markets, the capability to test and validate trading strategies before their real-world application has become paramount. This research project has designed a robust back testing program utilizing MATLAB, a platform known for its computational efficiency and vast analytical capabilities. The core objective was to simulate historical trading to evaluate the potential profitability and risk of a general trading strategy.  Following successful simulations, the results and insights gained from the backtesting were employed to craft a live trading system, designed using the python programming language and connecting to both “paper” and real markets using broker provided API’s (application programming interfaces). Preliminary findings indicate the effectiveness in strategy &#13;
development and this research underscores the importance of backtesting in trading strategy development and the seamless integration of such tools in the trading ecosystem.</text>
